Competitive Gymnastics

Congratulations to Shelbee Avelino for qualifying to National TOPs B Camp at Bela Karolyi's Camp in Texas. We are so proud of you!

USA Gymnastics (USAG) is the national organization set up to provide gymnasts with ten skill levels of competition. USAG sets these specific levels for competitive advancement from beginning competitors to our country's international level competitors.

We at CCG follow this level system set forth by USAG in both our boys and girls competitive programs. USAG begins its competitive levels with Compulsory routines that are the same nationwide for all athletes of the same level. As athletes progress through the levels, they begin competing Optional routines, which are unique individual routines for each athlete. Our programs for both boys and girls encompass both compulsory and optional gymnastics.

Each year the CCG coaching staff nominates one athlete per team based on 5 qualities:

  • Attendance
  • Attitude
  • Athletic Excellence
  • Academic Excellence
  • Sportsmanship

This year's nominees are:

  • Mallory Etter (Cheer "Rubies Squad")
  • Madison LeQuesne (Cheer "Emeralds Squad")
  • Grace Torres (Cheer "Diamonds Squad")
  • Tessa Merritt (Optional Girls Gymnastics)
  • Joshua Rabbon (Boys Gymnastics)

And the winner is...

Tessa Merritt

Tessa is a 14 year-old Level 9 gymnast. She began her season in SanDiego at the National Judges Cup. She competed throughout northern California and even travelled to Orlando, Florida to compete in the Disney Sports Center. Tessa placed 16th in the All Around at the Region 1 Championships. Region 1 consists of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. Her rank qualified her to compete in the Western National Championships in St. Louis Missouri. She is the first CCG gymnast to qualify to nationals. Tessa excels in school as well as gymnastics earning straight A's.

What are the Competitive Teams Doing Now

The CCG Compulsory Girls Team is currently in their competitive season. They are bringing home many First Place Team Awards this season! Meanwhile, Shelbee Avelino recently qualified to the Tops National Testing where she qualified to attend the Tops B camp at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas this December! The Tops program is designed to identify and assist future elite women's gymnasts and their coaches. Congratulations Shelbee!

The CCG Men's team is preparing for the 2009 season beginning in January. This year Level 5 State All Around Champions Blake Griffith (2007) and Trevor Henning (2008) lead what will certainly be one of the strongest Level 6 teams in the State.

The CCG Elite Cheer Squad is preparing for their next competitive season. Last season the Emerald Squad brought home two National Championship banners. Go to the cheer website to see pictures and highlights.

The CCG Acrobatic Gymnastics (Acro) team just finished their season at the National Championships. Congratulations to National Champion Level 7 pair, Shanna Sullivan and Janelle Setina. They recently put together their groups for next season. CCOAST Acro is bigger and better than ever!
